Nov 19, 2020 · Using the latest beta of Chrome, it doesn't appear to be using the M1 for hardware decode for 4K VP9, or AV1. I imagine Chrome calls VideoToolbox, so it should be architecture independent. Although, YouTube on iOS with an A14 does smoothly decode 4K VP9, so I'm assuming it's Chrome related. Safari does use hardware decoding for 4K VP9 though.

Nov 17, 2020 · Now as for OBS for this same reason I see an additional 10% at most frame rate drop during game capture, webcam capture at 1080p 60fps holds solid. This is why I suspect this is do to the Rosetta translation. If you want to see live action of the M1 gaming and streaming on OBS, just take a look at some of my streams.

You can do crazy fast (180-220 fps) hardware encoding via VideoToolbox for HD content (x264/265) but the file size and quality is sub optimal. Using software encoding 264->265 1080p runs about 30fps, which isn’t bad!
