Waikamoi Ridge Trail, an often unnoticed attraction on the Pacific’s most fabled road, climbs towards the sky just past mile marker 9 between Twin Falls and the Garden of Eden Arboretum before Ke’anae.

This Nā Ala Hele trail is a great way to spend an hour for a short workout in a beautiful old-growth forest or a great spot for a picnic stop along the Highway. The Waikamoi Ridge Trail is on the eastern edge of the Waikamoi Preserve, which protects some of the oldest trees on Maui.

The Waikamoi Ridge Trail, also called the Waikamoi Loop Trail, is one of the easiest day hikes off the famous Road to Hāna, and best of all, it’s free! I emphasize this because many things to do off the Hāna Highway, including Twin Falls, the Garden of Eden, a number of tours, and Hawaiʻi State Parks for out-of-state residents, are not free.

But one stop that shouldn’t be overlooked is the Waikamoi Ridge Trail. The rather modest path and park brim with tropical trees and flowers, boasting at its end an idyllic site, complete with a coastal viewpoint, that’s perfect for an out-of-the-way picnic.

In a nutshell: Waikamoi Nature Trail is an easy short-stop on the Road to Hana. Good for non-hikers. A nice quick-stop that many will appreciate. Minuses: Not among the long list of “spectacular” on this road. No waterfall. Sound-bite: “Worthwhile place to spend 20 minutes.”

The Waikamoi Ridge Nature Trail is open year-round and offers the perfect distance for exercise, exploring nature, and family outings. Use caution, however, for this trail might be a little slippery for non-experienced hikers.

The Na Ala Hele Hawaii Trail and Access System lists the Waikamoi Ridge Trail (aka Waikamoi Nature Trail) as a 1.1 mile loop. There is no bathroom at the Waikamoi Nature trailhead.
