Sep 23, 2020 · The house is full of the trappings of wealth, but rendered useless by the ice and snow. It’s the physical and metaphorical opposite of Strelnikov’s train, which violently propels the Revolution down the tracks to Vladivostok and back, a shrieking avatar of history itself.

The icy cottage, with its dinky icicles and plaster snow, was built in the mountainous region 100 miles northeast of Madrid at Soria, where more scenes were filmed around Candilichera. Other Spanish locations included Granada; Guadalajara; Aljalvir and Aranjuez.

Jan 7, 2018 · Thousands of tons of marble dust were used to emulate the Siberian landscape. And inside the famous ice palace at Varykino, at top, hundreds of rolls of cellophane were used to cover the furniture which were then covered with dripped wax. The snowy floors were achieved with salicylic acid powder and soap flakes.

The "ice-palace" at Varykino was filmed in Soria as well, a house filled with frozen beeswax. The charge of the partisans across the frozen lake was also filmed in Spain; a cast iron sheet was placed over a dried river-bed, and fake snow (mostly marble dust) was added on top.
