NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Delhi minister Atishi will take over as the new chief minister of India's national capital territory after the resignation of incumbent Arvind Kejriwal, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party said on Tuesday.

The AAP leader is the third woman CM of the national capital after late Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. At 43, Atishi is also the youngest CM in Delhi’s history, surpassing Kejriwal, who was 45 when he first took office.

The Aam Aadmi Party has said Atishi will take charge as Delhi’s chief minister. Incumbent Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to officially resign on Tuesday.

Following his shock announcement to step down, Arvind Kejriwal picked Atishi as the new Delhi chief minister. Earlier, he had also called for early polls in the Capital — in November. However, will the Election Commission heed his request?

The new Council of Ministers announced by AAP comprises Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat, a new entrant, besides ministers Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Imran Hussain.
