President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive action to overhaul elections in the U.S. Tuesday's order demands documentary proof of citizenship be added as a requirement for federal voter registration.

The order is expected to face challenges in court by civil rights groups, which argue it will disenfranchise millions of voters.

Election experts said Trump was claiming power he does not have and said lawsuits over the measure were all but guaranteed.
