A federal investigation into misuse of a student pilot’s license continues for an Alaska man who waited hours for rescue with two young family members on the wing of plane after he landed on a partially frozen lake,

A pilot and his two young daughters survived on the wing of a plane for about 12 hours after it crashed and was partially submerged in an icy Alaska lake, then were rescued after being spotted by a good Samaritan.

The mishap happened Saturday afternoon on United Flight 198 from Los Angeles International Airport to Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Data on FlightAware.com showed the flight took off on time just before 2 p.m. but was diverted to San Francisco, where it landed just after 5 p.m. There were 257 passengers and 13 crew members onboard.

A United Airlines 787 flying from Los Angeles to China had to turn around this weekend after it was discovered one of the pilots had taken off without their passport.

United Flight 198 left LAX on Saturday bound for China but was diverted to San Francisco because the pilot "did not have their passport onboard."
