Several airports, including Madrid airport, which is Spain's busiest, had no electricity, El Mundo reported. Major cities including Barcelona, Seville and Valencia were without power. Parts of France were also affected by power loss.

Large parts of Spain and Portugal - including Madrid and Lisbon - have been hit by a power outage. Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica says it could take up to 10 hours to restore power - as airports and public transport services have been affected in both countries.

A massive power outage appears to be affecting large portions of Spain and Portugal Monday. Red Electrica, the operator of Spain's power grid, said early Monday morning it had begun its plan to restore electricity and that the cause of the outage was being analyzed.
