This is the first time a deputy from that department has been killed in the line of duty in 14 years. Vargas was part of a team that went to arrest Robert Lee Davis on an aggravated assault charge Wednesday.

Brazoria County deputy shot dead in southwest Houston, suspect killed in police shootout
The officer who died was identified as Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. Police later killed the suspected shooter, 56-year-old Robert Davis III, after an hours-long manhunt.
