Tadhg Beirne's "world-class" actions make him the right fit to replace Peter O'Mahony as Munster's full-time captain, says Graham Rowntree. Reds boss Rowntree bided his time since O'Mahony gave up the captaincy last November after over 10 years in the role.

As expected Graham Rownteee has chosen Tadgh Beirne as Munster’s full-time captain in succession to Peter O’Mahony. The 32-year-old Irish lock was the obvious choice, having led Munster for the vast majority of last season after O’Mahony, who had been in the role since 2013, suddenly stepped down after one game as captain last November.

Beirne has been a mainstay of the Munster and Irish pack for the last number of seasons. O'Mahony had been captain for a decade having taken over from Doug Howlett. “A player of his calibre commands respect and he has grown into a key leader for us since coming here in 2018," Rowntree said.

Rather than take a left-field option in naming his captain for the season, the Munster supremo looked at his squad and picked the most influential player who did the job for him on an interim basis last year and handed him the responsibility.

O’Mahony had been Munster captain for more than ten years, taking over from Doug Howlett in the summer of 2013. Beirne joined Munster in the summer of 2018 after a hugely successful spell at the Scarlets where he won a Pro12 title.
