Do you have to take the elk tour, or can you just drive yourself to the elk conservation unit yourself? Is there something more to the Elk tour? I have a three-old that might not do well on a tour, but we would love the show her the elk!

Hi Suzanne! The elk tour that the park offers takes guests to an area that is inaccessible to the general public due to being on privately owned land that the park has special permission to access. The tour also includes a meal. The reason that we choose this particular area is that we have had a 100% success rate over since we started doing the tours 11 years ago. However, there is a viewing area that is on publicly accessible land. You can find it by traveling to the Southern Gap Outdoor Adventures Visitor Center and following the signs. The physical address is 1124 Chipping Sparrow Road, Grundy, VA.
Hi! I have been searching on all trails but cannot seem to find the hike that has the view of the fork in the river. Is there a hike to get there or is it an overlook? Thanks!

What fork? There is no fork as far as I can recall

Thank you very much for reaching out! The cottages are older facilities having been built in the 70’s. They have a small kitchen, 2 bedrooms, and 1 bath. They are split-level facilities with living room and kitchen on the bottom floor and bedrooms/bathroom on the upper floor. The log cabins are considerably newer having been built in 2007. They are considerably larger, ranging from 3 bedrooms/3 bathrooms to 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms. The kitchens in the cabins are considerably larger and they feature a rear deck and hot tub which overlooks the park’s lake. Overall, the cabins are larger and newer, but more expensive. The cottages are located in a very quiet area of the park and are less expensive.
