Hi...we were there at the beginning of May (5 of us) and bought early afternoon tickets when we arrived at the Visitor's Center. The tours run every 1.5 hours, so I'd suggest going late morning or early afternoon so if you miss the time when you arrive you have other times to choose from. There's a cafe, gift shop, museum and 10 minute film at the VC, plus a few vendors to browse set up outside in the bus area. The website lists tour times. Wear comfortable walking shoes for uneven, loose gravel surfaces, water and a hat. Very little, if any, shade.
